NHL defenseman knocked out of game after being hit by puck on bench

Liljegren was seated on the bench when a Colorado Avalanche cross-ice pass from Nathan MacKinnon was deflected by a Sharks player and hit him up high. Players had to help him get off the bench and toward the exit that leads to the hallway to the dressing room.

The Sharks later announced that Liljegren wouldn’t return to the game because of an upper-body injury.

Liljegren is in his second season with the Sharks after being acquired in a trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs a little more than a year ago.

He entered Saturday’s game with three assists in eight games and was averaging nearly 23 minutes a game.

The Sharks won 3-2 in overtime for their second victory in a row and third in four games.

Timothy Liljegren injury update

Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky says he doesn’t think the injury will be long-term.

‘We think he’s going to be OK,’ he said after the game. ‘We’ll get an update. … He’s still being evaluated.’
